Hello,
I’m Dimitar, a Design Engineer.
If you’re not deep in startups or don’t spend much time on X, the role might sound unfamiliar. Here’s what it means to me.
In late 2024, before I had the words for it, I got drawn into Rauno and Emil’s posts on X. It was a period when I grew increasingly frustrated with having to choose between design and development. I wanted both: the joy of shaping an idea and the satisfaction of bringing it to life, obsessing over the little details that make a product delightful.
So I took Emil’s course, Animation on the Web, and started hacking my way into design engineering. It was gratifying to gain a broad understanding of what I was working with, which easing curves feel good in animation, and what makes an interface great.
Even though I work as one today, I still struggle to define it, but, here’s a sentence or two on what it means to me:
A design engineer is an engineer with strong taste. I solve engineering problems, and I know design is a problem-solving tool, too. Interfaces should feel great to use. That feeling comes from fast load times, yes, but also from the invisible decisions baked into the interface.
This is craft.
